The release date for the eagerly anticipated game “Sonic Superstars” may have been inadvertently leaked by popular retailers GameStop and Target. The leak reportedly occurred following the Sonic Central Livestream.
The game, which is currently available for pre-order at both GameStop and Target, had its release date listed as October 17 on their websites. This is a month earlier than most Sonic game releases, which has led to speculation amongst fans and industry insiders alike. However, it was later found that the release date had been switched to the placeholder date of December 31, 2023, on both retailers’ websites.
“Sonic Superstars” was revealed at the Summer Game Fest earlier this month with a Fall 2023 release window. Given the recent trailer drop for the game, the revelation of an exact release date at this juncture would mark a notably quick turnaround.
Despite the placeholder date now being displayed, industry speculation suggests the game might be released sometime between August and October. For context, while August is technically a summer month, Sonic Mania was released during that period in 2017. Conversely, when Sega provides a Winter or Holiday release window for a new Sonic game, as was the case with Sonic Frontiers, the game typically gets a November release several months later.
If the leaked release date of October 17 proves to be accurate, “Sonic Superstars” would be launched amid stiff competition. It would share the release date with “Alan Wake 2,” and be closely followed by “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” and “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” both scheduled for release on October 20.
